Charlie Sheen- Yeah, I said it!

I have always heard, "sometimes bad publicity spreads faster than good publicity"; If this is the case, then Charlie Sheen has perfected it. Mostly everyone is familiar with Charlie's lifelong array of bad decisions that has now led him into more of a spotlight than the Pope. Through out the past few months, Charlie's personal social network sites have hit the jackpot, breaking world records.

Charlie's personal Twitter broke a record of 900,000 followers within 24 hours of his first tweet. Sheen contacted Ad.ly, a small Beverly Hills startup that focuses on celebrity endorsements via Facebook and Twitter, to help launch his account. His first "tweet" was a picture of him and one of his many girlfriends, with a caption that stated: "Winning..! Choose your Vice..." The phrase "#winning" has become a very popular tweet on Twitter.

By creating this account, Charlie is able to provide his audience with insight of what all is going on, but from a more personal perspective than, say, the news reports. One of the publishers that work for Ad.ly stated, "It is inevitable that brands will be lining up to work with him. That time will come sooner rather than later."

From a marketing standpoint, Charlie should take this opportunity to not only reach out to his audience, but also change the image that they have formed of him and his character on television. Although bad publicity is what brought him the majority of his recent fame, good publicity could help the fame stay around in the long run.

  1. hahaha! I was so about to post about Mr. Sheen as well. He has manipulated bad PR and is actually using it to his advantage. Besides the point that I think he is absolutely insane...I like his acting career. Two and a Half Men is a great show! Its too bad his personal life is negatively affecting his career. The media is having field days with this character, providing us with endless entertainment on and off screen. GREAT Post Tiff!

  2. Some say that bad publicity is better than no publicity at all, Charlie Sheen as taken this to a whole new level! I think what he is doing is genius, kinda crazy, but at the same time very smart. He has totally confused the media, and viewers so they do not know what to think of him.
As a result he has created one of the biggest social media frenzies we have ever seen. Since he has gotten twitter, I can not believe the amount of followers he has!

  3. Charlie Sheen has taken full advantage of social media to create a buzz about his ridiculous behavior over the past few months. The tweets that I've seen from him seem so outrageous that you have to wonder what is he really thinking. In his mind any PR is better than none. I don't think that he cares that his image is negative and going down hill fast; he's plastered across the magazines and on all the entertainment shows and that's all that is important to him. Is social media eating up all this ridiculous behavior to an extreme?

  4. I am so mad you wrote about this before me.(Haha) It is weird to think someone so crazy and unstable can bring so much popularity. I hate to say it but I have been sucked into this media buzz. I follow Charlie on twitter and watch every crazy episode he is interviewed for. I am a sucker for celebrity gossip. Even though I wouldn't want my products to be associated to Mr. Sheen, It would bring lot of publicity. I think he is playing out the character his plays in his sitcom "Two in Half Men".
